ES - wings of death (Comment by: Ukko 2011-07-01)
@Anarkhya: this is not a specific screen mode, it's just a low res video mode with a lot of palette splitting.

About the Targa vertical flip issue:
http://dmr.ath.cx/gfx/targa/
"int tga_is_top_to_bottom(const tga_image *tga);
Returns 1 if the Targa is stored in top-to-bottom order, or 0 if bottom-to-top order. By default, Targa images are stored in bottom-to-top order so that the positive y-axis points upwards as it usually does in mathematics."
A technical reason can be hinted here:

"readToBufferedImage
public static BufferedImage readToBufferedImage(int width,
int height)
throws GLException
Takes a screenshot of the current OpenGL drawable to a BufferedImage. Requires the OpenGL context for the desired drawable to be current. Note that the scanlines of the resulting image are flipped vertically in order to correctly match the OpenGL contents, which takes time and is therefore not as fast as the Targa screenshot function.
No alpha channel is read back with this variant.
Parameters:
width - the width of the current drawable
height - the height of the current drawable
Throws:
GLException - if an OpenGL context was not current or another OpenGL-related error occurred"

Unreal (.hu) - Spirit Forest (Comment by: mailman 2011-06-28)
Unreal about the picture: "I think it's not a real picture, it's something like a background for a game. A Simon-like (...) When making this picture I was quite patient, which was worth it. Although the others think the figure is too small. Many graphicians like to enlarge certain details but I prefer picture that are telling a story. Like this one. Spell and Magic..."

Unreal about the picture: "This is one of my worst pictures (...) It was a two day long hurry. Although the background and the sky are OK, the pose of the dragon is the thing that could make you ehmmm. It raises a bit and stands in an attacking pose. The dragon guards its territory."

Unreal (.hu) - Nativity (Comment by: mailman 2011-06-28)
Unreal about the picture: "Oh, Freedom! A similar pattern, but a different picture. Birth in clouds that took me three days to make. It was kinda hard to draw it (nocopy!) so there may be errors in it, but I think I got rid of them very well. This picture was made for our demo Motions but we left it out. The feelings of loneliness and freedom are present in the picture but who knows? Everyone sees something different in it, that's what art is for."
