BarZoule (Northern Dragons, Bawlz) (18.03.2009) (survey) graphician

Survey of BarZoule
Job: graphician

Survey submitted: Wed 18 Mar 2009

Handle, ex-handle(s):
BarZoule, BuZ

Name, birthday, origin:
Beausoleil Samson-Guillemette, 13/05/1, Québec, Canada

Group, ex-group(s):
Northern Dragons, Bawlz

What was your first group, your role in that group and what did that group produce?:
My first group was the Northern Dragons. I was looking forward to do graphics and 3D modeling. The first demo i worked on was the invitation for Pilgrimage 04. At around the same time Pat Groove decided to leave the scene and the group so i totally took over, which was a bit frightening but at the same time more comfortable, compared to helping on something i didn't know where it was going. Since then we produced a truck load of prods, including 4k intros, demos and music disks.

What motivates you to spend time on the scene?:
cuz it rulez i think it'S the convergeance of likely-minded and creative people. I really am a creative person and get really bored quickly when playing games or watrching tv/movies. I also can't stop from producing stuff on computer. At first i was making games but it's way too big for one person alone. Now doing smaller demos with a bunch of interresting person is way cooler.

What is your favorite color?:
depends on the context. I like the cyan/blue tint tho.

On what platform(s) did you begin your computing journey, and when was this?:
quite late in fact. it was a second hand 486 dx2/33. prior to that i touched the same kind of machine at school.

What platform(s) do you use now?:
PC, with Windows. I've also got a GP2X and my Pandora has been ordered.I haven't managed to do any demo on that yet tho.

What's the procedure when you start a new picture?:
I usually start doing roughs on paper, even for 3D. it's imporant for be to sketch up to better see what and how it could be.

What drawing/3d program are you using the most to express yourself? Why?:
Cinema4D is a winner for it's usability. It's really quick to get something done with it, and it work very well for bot low and high poly. I also like 3DSMax for animations cuz character studio is so easy

Do you draw on any other platforms beside computers? (Painting, Graffiti etc):
i don't do much more than pecil sketch on paper, which is sad. I should get to painting one day. As for graffiti, I'Ve got a skateboard and i should totally graffiti it!

What is/are your favorite piece(s) of music/s - from a demo production or a scener (released outside of a demo)?:
not one favorite. but paniq's stuff and LittleBitchard are safe values. Some years ago i was really fan of KB and PM and Maktone.

What is/are your favorite picture(s) - from a demo production or a scener (released outside of a demo)?:
i don't look much at standalone pictures released at parties. I always find them disapointing. And I can't pinpoint a picture in any demo.

Which project that you worked on was the most exciting and interesting for you? And why?:
many of them. The Evolutio 4K intro, my first 4K, was a really nice experience. I was doing the graphics and sound engine and music for it. I was way off the track when i look at it today, but still it fitted in the 4 kilobytes and I learned a lot from it. I'd say the biggest and most interrsting project after that is the Zynth, our software synth + editor for 4k prods. It's now at its 5th iteration and I'm proud of what i'Ve done so far.

from a graphician point of view i think Binary Alchimy was very fun to do. It had tons of loosely related themes and we could afford quite high-res models. another bonus: there is no texture in there, so i didn't have to worry about UVs =)

What is your favorite demo, intro, megademo, retrogame, slideshow, musicdisk, diskmag, wilddemo?:
1995 by Kewlers is a really big thing for me. The message resonate a lot in me. When they say "choose effects over 3ds" "choose zero polys and shaders". I mean fuck, they'Re right. There's way too many fly through demos out there. We need the effects back!
I also love the Fairlight and Ukscene Allstars stuff. Route 1066 and Track One are wonderful. I also recently diskovered [pu intended] Zine and it rules.
Oh and Nectarine is my fav radio

Discuss: minimalistic demos, cracktros, fucktros, joke demos, lamers, compo winners at big parties, demotools, diskmags, chiptunes, glenz vectors, programming languages, photoshop, textmode:

way too much to discuss here!! minimalistic demos ftw! since it forces a better design. Cracktros could bdo much better, they'Re always the same! The non serious stuff is i guess unavoidable but rarely funny enough to be non-lame. Demotools are really helpful, but you gotta make your own Diskmags are great but i rarely have time to read them. chiptunes ftw! programming language: asm is fun, java is lame, plain old ansi C is my favorite. And i hate to deal with APIs. I prefer to stick with the basic and do the rest myself. PHotoshop is useful but versions above 7 are useless. Textmode FTW! else i wouldn't have took over the organization of TMDC

What percentage of modern demos are 3d flybys?:
too much!

What percentage of older demos are the same effects recycled?:
too much too ..but what you need is to recycle and add some style to it. then it owns

What platform(s) needs more demos?:
GP2X. only Optimus got serious about that platform so far

Which parties do you intend to go to, and which parties would you like to go to? Please describe your personal experiences with your most favourite or impressive party you have ever been at.:
Block party i'll go for sure. I'd like to go to Breakpoint but it would be a very big trip (from canada).
Blockparty was impressive in term of atmosphere. The only other party i attended before was Pilgrimage and it sucked. NVscene, I had too many expectations.

How did the scene alter since you are taking an active part in it? Can you explain why?:
I saw the blooming of shaders and that's a relief. Now we can do creative and technical feat once again. yay for pixel control! but i don't have anything to do with that. On my part, i would think i helped the northamerican demoscene flourish a bit.

What are your dreams/goals in life, did scene help you and have you achieved them yet?:
when i was kid i wanted to make video games. I'm currently doing video games. The scene hasn't helped me that much i think. The games I did on my spare time helped much more but right now making demos really helps to let go of the creativity i can not have in my day job (cuz you know, you're not making a game for yourself but for a market)

Finally, do you have some special greetings? Feel free to add links to your graphics, screenshots of effects, modules or other pieces of your work.:

Greetings to my firends of ND and Bawlz. Greetings to the NA demoscene (ACiD, dc5, baoum, TPD, GLFusion, Flame, Hornet, Brainstorm (for the few na sceners in it)). Greetings to the few euro sceners i know (Sol, Gargaj, Tonic). Greetings to sites i enjoy: BitFellas, DemovibeRadio/Nectarine, pouet.
